Kolby Burke, former employee of Future Shop in Charlottetown and now of Best Buy, talks about the mood at the store and how workers were notified about the change.

Some employees at the Future Shop in Charlottetown have lost their jobs, a spokesperson for Best Buy has confirmed.

The Charlottetown location is one of 65 Future Shop stores that closed temporarily for a week before it is converted into a Best Buy location. Sixty-six Future Shop locations were closed permanently.

The company said approximately 500 full-time and 1,000 part-time positions will be eliminated as a result of the consolidation.

The Charlottetown store is supposed to reopen on Saturday, April 4.

The spokesperson said some affected employees will have the chance to reapply for positions once Best Buy goes through its hiring process.

Affected employees will receive severance, employee assistance and outplacement support.

With the rebranded stores, Best Buy will now have a total of 192 locations across Canada.

All Future Shop gift cards will be accepted at any Best Buy Canada location and at the company's website. Existing product orders, service appointments and warranties will continue to be honoured. Future Shop purchases to be returned or exchanged will also be accepted at any Best Buy.
