P.E.I.'s beach sand will be put to good use when Summerside hosts the beach volleyball tournament SandJam in July.

Summerside is taking over as the home of a major beach volleyball tournament this summer, as SandJam is coming to the city.

The event features many of the best beach volleyball players in Canada, and will take place July 22 to 24, during the Summerside Lobster Festival.

Promoters are billing it as "the premier professional beach volleyball competition in Canada," and plan to include the top eight Canadian teams.

SandJam has previously been held in Halifax, but Summerside's infrastructure won over the SandJam promoters. ((CBC))
SandJam has previously been held in Halifax, running from 2011 to 2014, with a break last year.

The promoters have said that costs to bring in sand and create the courts were more favourable in Summerside, and that the city had approached them, interested in hosting the event.

The Summerside waterfront will be transformed into a temporary world-class beach volleyball stadium, complete with two Olympic-sized beach courts, stadium seating, a concert stage and food and beverage outlets.

The tournament is expected to have an economic impact of close to $400,000.
