"The Gatsby" from Sims Corner Steakhouse wins most loved burger

Organizers with P.E.I.’s Burger Love festival say they sold double the number of burgers this year compared to last, raking in more than $1.1 million in burger sales alone.

More than 92,000 burgers were sold at participating restaurants during the month-long campaign in April, up from 46,000 last year.

Fifty-four restaurants took part in this year's campaign.

The competition is designed to promote Island beef, with all the burgers featuring beef raised on P.E.I.

"The Gatsby" from Sims Corner Steakhouse and Oyster Bar was voted this year's most loved burger.

“It started from the very first day in the storm. We were calling staff in on the very first day. We were hiring our summer staff in April instead of June. You know we sold a hundred times more burgers than we did last year. It was huge for our staff and huge for our restaurant,” said general manager Craig MacMillan.

Burger Love organizers say close to 19,050 kilograms of beef was used and other businesses — including bread and vegetable suppliers, cheese makers and pork producers —  also benefited.

Sims Corner says it will keep The Gatsby on the menu for the year.
