18 tonnes of food raised in Y's Men drive

The Upper Room Food Bank in Charlottetown is celebrating another successful Y's Men food drive.

On Monday night volunteers collected food from all around the Charlottetown area, filling 39 pallets for an estimated 18 tonnes of food. Food bank manager Mike MacDonald said that's on the high end of the average of what the food drive has generated over the last few years.

"We're extremely pleased with it," said MacDonald.

"The amount of food is quite overwhelming, to be honest with you, and the generosity of Islanders, with not only their donations but their time to volunteer, just amazes us."

Demand is up slightly at the food bank. McDonald said with the food expected to be donated over the Christmas season the Upper Room should be good for supplies through February.
