Paskapoo land saved from commercial development
A piece of land in west Calgary that is home to a number of wild animals is being saved from development.
The Calgary Olympic Development Association is buying 219 acres on the Paskapoo Slopes. It is the area bordered by Sarcee trail to the Trans-Canada Highway to Patterson Woods.
CODA says the land will be used for recreation.Hugh Magill is the president of the Paskapoo Slopes Preservation Society, a group that has been fighting to preserve the area. He's pleased CODA has purchased the land. "It was owned by a housing developer and it was proposed for development partly as commercial and partly as housing," Magill told CBC Radio News. "So it was in danger of being developed as residential and commercial development."
Magill hopes CODA's move encourages Calgary city council to buy up more of the land on Paskapoo slopes. He says there are another 70 acres the city could set aside as a park.
