A new bylaw comes into effect in Ottawa on Friday regulating ride-hailing services such as Uber.

Last spring, the City of Ottawa passed new "vehicle-for-hire regulations" — the first jurisdiction in Ontario to do so — to bring ride-hailing services like Uber in line with the city's taxi bylaws.

The new rules that come into effect today mean the companies must secure an licence to operate legally in the city, and must ensure their drivers meet various regulations.

But getting to this point has been a bumpy ride for both Uber and the taxi industry.

Check out the timeline below to see what happened from the moment Uber arrived in this city to now.
