Teen dies from gunshot wound near Maniwaki, Que. after police pursuit

Montreal police are investigating after a Quebec provincial police officer fired a shot at a teenager during a police pursuit early this morning near Maniwaki, Que.

A teenager is dead from a gunshot wound after a pursuit by Quebec provincial police ended just south of Maniwaki, Que., early this morning.

The pursuit between a vehicle and Sûreté du Québec police officers began at about 1:30 a.m. and ended at Chemin de la Ferme and Rue Patry, close to Lac Blue Sea in the municipality of Messines.

The investigation into the shooting is being handled by Montreal police. (CBC News)

When the vehicle stopped, a Sûreté du Québec officer got out of a cruiser to approach the suspect vehicle.

"At this exact moment the driver just accelerated, and the police officer was still beside the vehicle," said Montreal police spokesman Manuel Couture.

The officer was dragged alongside the vehicle. The officer then fired his weapon in the driver's direction, Couture said.

The driver was taken to hospital in critical condition and the officer was taken to hospital for shock. A second person sitting in the passenger seat of the fleeing vehicle was not injured.

On Monday afternoon, Montreal police said that the shooting victim had died. The teen's age has not been released.

Montreal police have been tasked by the province to investigate the shooting.
