Serena Ryder to headline Canada Day in Ottawa
Marianas Trench, Whitehorse, Nadja, Brett Kissel, Véronic DiCaire and Daniel Lavoie also to perform
A pair of 2014 Juno winners — Ontario folk rocker Serena Ryder and Alberta country singer Brett Kissel — will perform on Parliament Hill this Canada Day.
Festivities begin on Parliament Hill at 9 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by the Changing of the Guard at 9:30 a.m. and a Peace Tower carillon concert at 10 a.m.
The lineup of artists will perform a noon show, which will include a flypast of CF-18 fighter jets and Snowbirds, and an evening show beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Ottawa's Swing Dynamite Dance School will perform 1930s- and 1940s-style swing dancing on the east lawn of Parliament Hill from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Honouring veterans
Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Shelly Glover announced the Canada Day celebration plans in Gatineau Tuesday morning at the Canadian Museum of History.
The 100th anniversary of the First World War, the 75th anniversary of the Second World War, and the end of the mission in Afghanistan will be highlighted during this year's celebrations, Glover said.
The celebrations will also mark the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences, and Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
July 1 activities will take place on Parliament Hill and Major's Hill Park in Ottawa, and at Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau.
