Ottawa police to guard sentries after signing contract with federal government
Sentries took their positions guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa today for the 2015 session.
The sentries, who will rotate throughout the spring, summer and fall, will watch the National War Memorial until Remembrance Day, Nov. 11.
Thursday also marked the 98th anniversary of the battle to take Vimy Ridge.
For the first time, Ottawa police officers will guard the sentries after agreeing to a $425,000 contract with the Department of National Defence.
In a CBC News exclusive, log entries show the guards received some abusive and disrespectful treatment before the fatal shooting of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo on Oct. 22, 2014.
