Scouts Canada leader released on bail with strict conditions
Scott Stanley, 30, facing 18 charges related to incidents in 2012 and 2013
A 30-year-old former City of Ottawa lifeguard, Scouts Canada volunteer and swim coach facing 18 sexual assault-related charges has been released on bail, with strict conditions.
Scott Stanley was arrested and charged Thursday and made a quick court appearance Friday for incidents police say happened in 2012 and 2013 while Stanley was a Scouts leader.
He appeared in court Monday for a full-day bail hearing into 18 sexual assault-related charges, after spending the weekend in jail.
Stanley was released on a $5,000 bond and $16,000 in sureties from his parents.
Stanley will not be able to communicate with any of the alleged victims, nor with people under the age of 18, as part of the conditions of his release.
He faces six counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference with a person under 16, three counts of invitation to sexual touching for a person under 16, two counts of telecommunication with a person under 16 for a specific criminal offence and one count of telecommunication with a person under 14 for a specific criminal offence.
The alleged incidents involve three boys under the age of 16, police said.
Scouts Canada suspension in May
On Friday, Scouts Canada said it suspended Stanley on May 12 for not adhering to all of its child and youth safety policies and procedures, but that prior to May, "Stanley had met all of these requirements."
The organization said it shared all of the information it gathered with Ottawa police.
There has been no information released connecting any of the charges to Stanley's work as a lifeguard and aquatics supervisor at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex pool, or to his work as a swim coach with the Goulbourn Sea Hawks.
Stanley's contract as coach was not renewed as of this year, a spokesperson has told CBC News, and the city said it has suspended him without pay from his job as a part-time lifeguard.
City officials said they are co-operating with the investigation and refused to comment on the charges.
No prior criminal record
Stanley does not have any prior criminal charges on his record, which is expected since he had to pass a criminal record check with Scouts Canada and the City of Ottawa.
Anyone with information on possible further incidents is asked to call Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
Scouts Canada has faced its fair share of criticism in regards to sexual abuse allegations. That was the focus of an investigation by the CBC's Fifth Estate in 2011.
