The Rideau Canal Skateway is closed for the season, the National Capital Commission said Thursday.

The full 7.8 kilometres of the skateway, including Patterson Creek and the Hartwell Locks, had been open since Feb. 12 but was closed on Saturday, Feb. 20 due to rain.

The 46th skating season began on Jan. 23, but mild and adverse weather had already caused two separate temporary closures before the storm that ultimately closed it for good.

This is the shortest skating season in the Rideau Canal Skateways history, beating the previous record of 26 skating days in 2001-02.
