Paramedics said a woman, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened on the route of Ride the Rideau, a charity event raising money for cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital. Police later said the victim was participating in the event.

Ride the Rideau shut down

Event spokeswoman Stephanie Egan confirmed the event was shut down because there was no route around the crash scene.

Egan also said 400 cyclists participating in the event were being taken back to the EY Centre in OC Transpo buses.

No other cyclists were believed to be hurt. Paramedics did say they were attending to many bystanders affected by the incident.

Police closed River Road between Nixon Road, or Roger Stevens Drive, and Doyle Road for several hours. It reopened overnight.

Police also want anyone with information about the crash to call them at 613-236-1222, ext. 3212.
