Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard cancelled a Saturday afternoon appearance at a provincial Liberal Party event in Gatineau over "security reasons" as dozens of protesters gathered outside the venue to oppose his government.

Security officials said there was not an entrance to the building secure enough for the premier.

Stéphanie Vallée, the minister responsible for the Outaouais region, spoke on his behalf at the event.

"The premier apologizes that he was not able to be present for security reasons," she said.

The event in Gatineau is one of nine "thematic forums" being held across Quebec in February and March to consult Quebec Liberal Party supporters.
