A cloudy, chilly start to the day, and rain is on the way this afternoon.

Showers should start in the capital in mid-to-late afternoon, but the main rain event really gets going this evening, lasting into Friday.

There are rainfall warnings for western Quebec's communities surrounding Gatineau, where the rain could start earlier and is expected to last until Friday evening, dropping as much as 25 to 45 millimetres.

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for Gatineau and eastern Ontario, warning as much as 20 to 40 millimetres of rain could fall, most of it coming overnight and not lasting as far into Friday.

The rain is one of the factors pushing water levels on the Ottawa River, St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario back up.

Look for a high in the low teens in areas between Ottawa and Kingston, only around 9 or 10 C further north.

An easterly wind gusting over 50 km/h will make it feel even cooler.

Things dry out and warm up for the weekend.
