Ottawa drivers for the controversial ride-sharing company Uber are now making trips to Gatineau on a trial basis.

The trial began last Friday, and it allows existing Ottawa drivers to pick up ride requests in Gatineau and take them to Ottawa.

Because the drivers aren't physically based in Gatineau they don't need a license to operate in Gatineau, but Quebec traffic officials say they'll monitor Uber drivers coming into the city to make sure they're obeying the law.

In Ottawa, bylaw officials have laid about two-dozen charges against Uber drivers since the service came to the city in the fall of 2014.
