Ottawa RedBlacks officially revealed as newest CFL team
New CFL team name the 3rd in city's history after Rough Riders, Renegades
The worst kept secret in Ottawa, and maybe in the entire Canadian Football League, was revealed Saturday afternoon as the Ottawa RedBlacks is the league's newest football franchise.
Ottawa's third CFL franchise unveiled the new name at an event for season's ticket holders at the Ernst and Young Centre after months of speculation and a leak of the name and logo in late May.
The team's motto will be, "balanced, dangerous, unstoppable," as outlined in a promotional video that detailed the history of the colours "red" and "black" in Ottawa sports history.
The RedBlacks are slated to begin playing at Frank Clair Stadium in the summer of 2014 after construction should be completed at Lansdowne Park.
CFL commissioner Mark Cohon and about 3,000 others were on hand for the announcement, made by owner Jeff Hunt representing the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group.
There were also 35 members of CFL alumni, including legendary Ottawa Rough Rider quarterback Russ Jackson and wide receiver Tony Gabriel, and the Grey Cup at the name unveiling.
