No plans for taxi driver strike on Canada Day over Uber threat
Union holds "crisis meeting" but makes no firm job action resolution
Ottawa taxi drivers have no plans to strike this Canada Day over the threat posed to their industry by ride-sharing service Uber, after a meeting involving union leaders wrapped up Monday night without resolving to take job action.
Still, the threat posed by Uber to the livelihoods of city taxi drivers remains very real, said Amrik Singh, the president of the union representing some 1,800 drivers in the city.
"We will be able to tell media some later time about our plans," said Singh. "But first, we want to give the city of Ottawa enough time to enforce their bylaws."
The city has declared Uber an unlicensed service and has charged dozens of drivers since October, when Uber launched its service.
