Millions of cigarettes seized in Cornwall

Police in Cornwall, Ont., seize nearly four million cigarettes in a string of arrests targeting contraband.

Police in Cornwall, Ont., have seized nearly four million cigarettes and arrested 10 people in a string of October busts targeting contraband.

The Cornwall Regional Task Force announced the arrests and seizures Thursday, including the confiscation of two boats and eight other vehicles. Police snagged 19,773 resealable bags, each packed with 200 cigarettes.

The string of seizures took place between Oct. 5 and Wednesday in different areas of Ontario including Cornwall and its port of entry from the United States, South Glengarry, Akwesasne and South Dundas, police said.

Those arrested face charges of possessing contraband cigarettes under the federal Excise Act and the province's Tobacco Tax Act.

The Cornwall Regional Task Force includes officers from the RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police, Cornwall police and Ontario's Revenue Ministry.
