Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin Gatineau's mayor elect after upset win

The City of Gatineau has a new mayor-elect this morning after Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin unseated Marc Bureau in a surprise win.

Bureau has been mayor of the city since 2005.

On Sunday, Pedneaud-Jobin won with 52 per cent of the vote while Bureau took 36 per cent of the vote.

Pedneaud-Jobin ran with a slate of candidates under the banner of a new municipal political party called Action Gatineau.

Four other members of Pedneaud-Jobin's party were elected to the 18-member council.

The construction scandal that enraged voters in Quebec's largest municipalities didn't seem to be an issue in Gatineau.

But Bureau did face challenges, including the new Rapibus system unveiled in the middle of the campaign last month. Problems with the new system have left some riders with longer and more inconvenient commutes.

The mayor-elect said one of his first jobs will be to get the Rapibus system working properly for commuters.

Pedneaud-Jobin promised to bring back some of the express buses to fill the gaps in the short term.

Voter participation in Gatineau remained low with only 42 per cent of eligible voters taking part, up slightly from 39 per cent in 2009.

There was another upset in Pontiac last night as Roger Larose, a longtime city councillor, unseated incumbent mayor Eddie McCann.

In Chelsea, incumbent Caryl Green won her seat back over her main rival in the race, Coun. Marcel Gauvreau.

In La Pêche, which includes the town of Wakefield, Mayor Robert Bussiere was acclaimed. And in Shawville, Sandra Murray — replacing former mayor Albert Armstrong — was also acclaimed.
