Tours of the former Kingston Penitentiary will continue next year, after a "highly successful" 2016 season, the City of Kingston announced.

More than 60,000 people visited the former maximum-security prison between June and October on tours that included cameos by retired Correctional Service of Canada staff. The tours will run from May to October in 2017.

The prison shut down in September 2013, after nearly 180 years in operation. Some of Canada's most infamous inmates were incarcerated at the Kingston Pen, including murderer and rapist Paul Bernardo and child killer Clifford Olson.

The City of Kingston will continue its partnership with Correctional Service of Canada and the St. Lawrence Parks Commission to deliver the tours. The 2016 tours "produced a regional economic impact of approximately $5 million," according to the city.
