Kevin Martin, accused in Russian diplomat stabbing, granted bail

A Canadian Forces reservist charged in the stabbing of a Russian diplomat on Friday is out on bail after an appearance at Ottawa court Monday.

Kevin Martin, age 32, was charged with aggravated assault after Andrey Gorobets was found bleeding in the lobby of a Stewart Street apartment building Friday morning.

On Monday Martin was released on a $5,000 bail paid by his mother and a $10,000 bond paid by him after appearing via video.

He must stay at least 100 metres away from 400 Stewart Street, the site of the stabbing, not drink or carry any weapons unless he's on duty with the Canadian Forces and not communicate with any witnesses, the victim or his family.

Martin must live with his mother and will be back in court April 9.

Reservist with rank of private, DND employee

The Department of National Defence said Monday Martin is a private in Ottawa 33 Signal Regiment, which is a reserve communications unit.

They said he’s also a civilian network systems operator with the Department of National Defence.

Court records show Martin lives at 400 Stewart Street, the apartment where residents said many employees of nearby embassies work.

The Russian Embassy, where Gorobets works, is around the corner less than half a kilometre away.

Gorobets's injuries were described as non life-threatening when he was taken to hospital on Friday. Ottawa police said on Monday that he left the country over the weekend and they don't know when he'll return.

Police would not say if Gorobets gave them a statement before he left.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Friday they have no indication the stabbing was politically motivated.
