Inmate dies after Ontario prison riot

An inmate at a medium-security prison near Peterborough, Ont., has died of a suspected drug overdose after a riot overnight at the facility.

About 200 inmates at the Warkworth Institution refused to return to their cells around 9 p.m. ET Tuesday night as the recreation yard was being closed, said prison officials.

Officials said some of the prisoners had breached the prison health facility. Eleven inmates were taken to an outside hospital with suspected narcotics overdoses and one of them died.

Inmates set fires inside the yard before riot squads regained control of the area around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The Correctional Service of Canada isn't commenting on what was behind the protest.

The prison is located in Campbellford, around 70 kilometres southeast of Peterborough, and houses just under 600 inmates, according to corrections officials.

The prison was under lockdown on Wednesday. All inmates have returned to their cells.

None of the prison's 340 staff was injured in the disturbance.
