Friends and family are mourning the death of 15-year-old Jamie Hubley, the son of Kanata South councillor Allan Hubley who died Saturday, as a result of suicide.
The teen had spoken out for gay students at his high school, A. Y. Jackson in Kanata, and had struggled with depression before his death.
Councillor Hubley said in a statement Monday that Jamie was bullied in high school for promoting acceptance for gay students and said while it wasn't the only reason for his death it was "a factor."
"We hope from our tragedy others will become more active in stopping this cruelty towards children," said Allan Hubley, who said he would work to bring awareness to groups that stop bullying and find treatment for depression.
Visitations will be held at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry on Woodroffe Ave. on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service is being held at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church at 44 Rothesay Drive on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Donations may be made to Youth Services Bureau's Mental Health Walk-in Clinic.
