The owner of the Ottawa Senators NHL team and an anonymous liver donor have both been released from hospital in Toronto following their successful liver transplant surgeries in May.

"Mr. Melnyk's recovery has been proceeding very well since undergoing his transplant [on May 19]," said Dr. Atul Humar  in a media release issued by the Senators on Wednesday.

The anonymous donor who gave up part of their liver is doing "extremely well," added Humar, who is part of Melnyk's medical team.

Melnyk will require weekly follow-ups with his medical team and is now in a rehabilitation facility.

"Mr. Melnyk and his family continue to be very thankful for all the support and best wishes received from the public, the media and the broader NHL family," the media release stated.

The team announced in early May that Melnyk was in need of a live liver transplant, and 12 people out of hundreds who expressed interest were put through a screening process.
