Police say dog was a bull mastiff-rottweiler mix

Ottawa police say they had to kill a dog after it tried to attack a man and his one-year-old son in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood Friday evening.

Police were called to the 200 block of Wiggins Private around 6:30 p.m. following a report of a dog attack, the Ottawa Police Service said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

That's when an officer noticed a large, "aggressive" bull mastiff-Rottweiler mix running through the neighbourhood.

Police said the animal knocked a man and his infant son to the ground and continued to bite the man.

The officer then noticed the dog turning towards the young boy and — fearing the dog would continue to attack — shot and killed it, police said.

The adult suffered non-life threatening injuries to his face, hands and buttock, said police, while the one-year-old sustained minor injuries to his forehead due to his fall.

The city's bylaw office is investigating.
