Cyclist killed after collision with tractor trailer
Man, 38, pronounced dead at scene of crash at Merivale and West Hunt Club roads
A 38-year-old man is dead after a crash with a tractor trailer near the intersection of Merivale and West Hunt Club roads.
It happened at 7:50 a.m.Thursday. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
He and the transport truck were heading east on West Hunt Club Road when they collided, police said.
The collision occurred as the truck made a right turn to turn south onto Merivale Road, according to collision investigator Cst. Kevin Bradford.
There are dedicated bike lanes on this stretch of West Hunt Club Road, but people who work nearby say the posted speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour should be lowered.
"At this time I still can't confirm at what speeds this did or did not happen," said Bradford. "I don't even know if speed was a factor."
Police shut down the intersection to allow collisions unit officers to investigate what caused the crash, though the lanes have now been reopened.
The investigation will take at least a week to complete, police said.
