Community mailboxes now being used by 7,900 Kanata addresses

Today marks the end of door-to-door mail delivery for some neighbourhoods in Kanata, one of the first areas in Ottawa to see the end of service.

Instead of Canada Post employees making the trip to about 7,600 households and 300 businesses in Kanata, they'll drop off packages, bills and other correspondence at community mailboxes.

About 500 community mailboxes have been installed in Kanata. The affected postal codes include K2K, K2L and K2M.

Nationwide, door-to-door mail service is ending at about 100,000 households today, according to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

The union announced last week that it's taking Canada Post to federal court over the decision to cut door-to-door service. The union says it's up to Parliament, not Canada Post, to decide on such a major change of service.

The crown corporation, meanwhile, says it made the decision for financial reasons.

The union will be on Parliament Hill at 1 p.m. ET today to set up a community mailbox to protest the end of door-to-door service.
