Canada election 2015: Election signs now allowed on private property in Ottawa
Public property must still be free of election signs until Sept. 19, bylaw states
Ottawa residents can post election signs on their own properties as of Thursday, but public property must continue to be free of political signs for another month.
The City of Ottawa bylaw bans election signs on any property until 60 days before voting day, which is Oct. 19.
The bylaw also bans signs on public property until 30 days before an election. For the federal election, that will be Sept. 19.
The bylaw has not had much of an effect in years past, but this year's early election call on Aug. 2 forced candidates to wait before going into full campaign mode.
Several municipalities outside the City of Ottawa have allowed signs on public property for weeks including Smiths Falls and Carleton Place.
