Communities hold local celebrations for those who don't head to Parliament Hill

If you're looking to avoid the hoard of Canadians spread throughout downtown Ottawa for Canada Day, there are a series of events in local communities.

Here are the events happening around Ottawa:

Stittsville

  • Goulbourn Recreation Complex, 1500 Shea Rd. - 3-11 p.m.
  • Inflatable rides with Amos the Transparent playing at 8 p.m. then fireworks at 9:45 p.m.

Greater Orleans

  • Petrie Island - 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Festivities including inflatable rides and beach volleyball then fireworks at 10 p.m.

Vars

  • Alcide Trudeau Park, 5715 Rockdale Rd. - 10 a.m. to 11 pm.
  • Inflatable rides, kids games and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Riverside South

  • Claudette Cain Park, 660 River Rd. - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Inflatable rides, petting zoo and barbeque.

Barrhaven

  • Clarke Fields, 93 Houlahan St. - 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • A midway with rides and food beginning on June 29.

Osgoode

  • Osgoode Community Arena, 5660 Main St. - Noon to 11 p.m.

North Gower

  • Alfred Taylor Recreation Centre, 2300 Community Way - Noon to 11 p.m.

Greely

  • Greely Community Centre, 1448 Meadow Dr. - 5-11 p.m.
  • Barbeque, bouncy castle and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Sparks Street

  • Between Elgin and Bank streets - 2-9 p.m.

Kanata

  • Kanata Recreation Complex, 100 Walter Baker Place - 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Concerts and festivities, including face painting, starts at 11 a.m. with Trooper on stage at 8 p.m., and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Carp

  • Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War Museum, 3911 Carp Rd. - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Free admission for face paiting, refreshments and live performances.

The Canada Day event at Andrew Haydon Park will not take place this year. The organizer did not apply for a permit to hold the event, according to a City of Ottawa spokesperson, and there has been no indication that it would happen.

The mayor's breakfast with seniors also won't take place on Canada Day this year because a location could not be secured.
