Bon Echo wind farm in Addington Highlands one step closer to reality

Plans for a large wind farm southwest of Renfrew are closer to becoming reality after local politicians voted Monday to strike down a motion to kill the controversial project.

Two companies, NextEra Energy and RES Canada, have proposed building some 200 turbines in Addington Highlands Township in the Bon Echo Park area.

Proponents say the project would bring millions in land fees and development to the area, as well as create a sustainable, renewable energy source.

However, Monday's township council meeting was packed with both year-round and seasonal residents who denounced the plans for the vast wind farm in the rugged, sparsely populated area between the towns of Denbigh and Kaladar.

According to surveys carried out by the township, people who've opposed the plans have expressed concerns about noise and light pollution, habitat destruction and property devaluation.

​Many of those in opposition arrived at the meeting wearing white t-shirts featuring an image of a crossed-out wind turbine. 

'I can't live with that'

Chants of "Shame!" broke out when the township's council voted against a motion that would have killed the controversial project.

"[I'll] probably fix the house up and sell it and get out of here," said township resident Al LeClair.

"I'm not going to stick up for these guys. I can't live with that."

tIf built, the turbines would be about 100 metres high to their hub, somewhat taller than the Peace Tower, which stands 92 metres high.

Proposed propeller lengths vary and have not been decided on.

Addington Highlands councillors will vote next on whether to support in principle two competing proposals for the project on July 20.
