An eastern Ontario man is dead after a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Kingston, Ont., Saturday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police said the man was standing outside his truck when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle, causing a "chain reaction" crash involving two other vehicles.

He was identified Sunday as 27-year-old Wade Young of South Frontenac Township.

OPP were called to the scene near the Westbrook Road overpass shortly after 5 a.m.

Early indications suggest an SUV had crashed into a guardrail on the highway and was stopped in the passing lane.

"We believe [Young] came out of the vehicle to look at the damage when the car behind him a short time later ran into the back of the vehicle," Const. Roop Sandhu told the Canadian Press.

One of the vehicles in the ensuing multi-vehicle crash was hauling a camper trailer, Sandhu said. Five people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Possibly too dark to see victim

Sandhu said other drivers may not have been able to see the stopped vehicle in the dark.

"It's too early to say about possible charges, but everything's going to be taken into consideration," he said.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 remained closed near the scene of the crash until around 6 p.m. Saturday. They are now open.
