Okanagan woman sues hospital over brain injury

A North Okanagan woman has filed a lawsuit against doctors and nurses at Vernon Jubilee Hospital claiming medical malpractice.

In documents filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Shannon Harder-Kohnert alleges she suffered a brain injury after being given the wrong medication.

The incident is alleged to have happened in 2010 when Harder-Kohnert was at the hospital undergoing treatment for Crohn's disease.

The lawsuit claims she was given insulin instead of liquid Gravol, causing her to lose consciousness and hit her head on the bathroom floor.

Harder-Kohnert says she sustained a brain injury and has since suffered from cognitive problems, vision problems and dizziness.

The lawsuit names two doctors, two nurses, Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Interior Health as defendants.

Harder-Kohnert is seeking an unspecified amount in compensation.

The allegations have not been proven in court.

A spokesperson with Interior Health says they will not comment on the lawsuit while the matter is before the courts.
