Young QMJHL prospect remembered as hard-working player

An autopsy is expected to offer more clues as to why a young Nova Scotia hockey player died suddenly on Monday while training with a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team.

Jordan Boyd, 16, of Bedford, was practising during his first day of training camp with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in northeastern New Brunswick when he collapsed on the ice.

According to a statement, the team’s medical unit tried to revive him several times, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Last year, Boyd played for the Rothesay Netherwood School hockey team in New Brunswick and was named the team's best 15-year-old.

"We talked before the draft about hoping he'd get there and then afterwards the smile on his face at how proud he was and how honoured he was, like he wasn't a boastful guy, he just took the exact right attitude of being humble and being hard working and giving a dream his best shot," said the private school's headmaster, Paul Kitchen.

"He grew so much in his year at the school and his mother and I had this great talk about how proud she was of Jordan and how well he had done at the school and how he had taken the challenges to become a better student. He’s every mother's dream son and every coach's dream player."

According to a statement from Titan officials, Boyd passed a full medical evaluation before attending camp.
