A plan to make streetscape improvements to downtown Yarmouth is getting $500,000 in funding from ACOA.

Along with landscaping, lighting and other improvements designed to make the area more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, there will be new signage, banners and kiosks to promote the downtown.

The work will focus on the section of Main Street between John and Cliff streets.

The town is also funding a project to spruce up the facades of up to 35 commercial properties. Eligible property owners can receive up to a maximum of $5,000 for completing the work.

Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says work is set to begin this month and could be completed by the fall.

She says local businesses catering to tourists took a bit of a nose dive when the ferry didn't operate between 2009 and 2013.

The Nova Star Cruises ferry service from Portland, Maine, is set to begin June 1.
