A 55-year-old fisherman from Yarmouth County has died after a fall on board a vessel about 165 kilometres south of Cape Sable Island in Nova Scotia.

Yarmouth RCMP said Paul Vernon "Brex" Malone, from Lower East Pubnico, was a crewman on a sword fishing boat called Savana & Jax. Malone fell from the spar on Tuesday and died as a result of his injuries, said police.

Mike Bonin, a spokesperson with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, said they received a call at approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday that a fisherman had fallen on a boat and suffered head injuries.

"The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre dispatched a Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules aircraft from 14 Wing Greenwood. As well, they dispatched Coast Guard cutters from the area to respond," Bonin said Wednesday.

"Before most of those assets were either in the air or had left the shore, we received a call back from the same fishing vessel stating that the crew member had unfortunately deceased."

The Savana & Jax arrived in East Pubnico on Wednesday morning and was met by Yarmouth RCMP members.

RCMP believe the death is not suspicious.
