Wild weather stops N.S. ferries
Thousands lose power as storm whips province
Wild weather caused power outages and stopped ferries across Nova Scotia Monday.
Nova Scotia Power reported more than 27,000 customers had lost electricity across the province. Most services had been restored by midafternoon.
Both Halifax Harbour ferries were cancelled as officials waited for the wind and rain to die down. Service resumed at 10:30 a.m.
Marine Atlantic's Atlantic Vision and Leif Ericson were holding in North Sydney while the Smallwood was holding in Port aux Basques, N.L.
The ferry service between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia has also been cancelled.
Environment Canada issued a storm surge warning for the Eastern Shore as water levels rose. There were reports of lawns being submerged and basements being flooded in the Musquodoboit Harbour area. Large rocks have been blown onto roads near Lawrencetown and Cow Bay near Halifax.
A wind and suetes warning was in effect in Cape Breton, with gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour across most of the island and 120 kilometres an hour from Margaree Harbour to Bay St. Lawrence.
The forecast called for up to 20 milimetres of rain in Cape Breton Monday.
