The RCMP are investigating two separate fatal crashes that happened on highways in Nova Scotia's Cumberland County on Monday.

The first collision happened around 12:30 p.m. on Highway 104 in Upper Nappan.

Police said a grey Subaru Forester was travelling eastbound in the westbound lane when it collided head-on with a grey Ford F-150. Most of the highway in that area is divided.

The driver and only occupant of the Subaru, a 61-year-old Prince Edward Island woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and only occupant of the Ford, a 59-year-old Stellarton woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

A section of Highway 104 was closed for several hours as police investigated, but was later reopened.

Second crash in Mapleton

Around 1:49 p.m., officers were called to another crash on Highway 2 in Mapleton.

The Mounties said a beige Toyota Tacoma was travelling on the highway when it left the roadway, hit a power pole and came to rest overturned in the ditch.

The driver and only occupant of the Toyota, a 71-year-old Southampton man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A collision reconstructionist went to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
