A 35-year-old woman from Halifax has died as a result of a three-vehicle crash on Highway 104 Monday afternoon.

RCMP say the preliminary investigation determined an SUV travelling east on Highway 104 crossed the centre line, striking the rear driver's side of an oncoming pick-up truck. The SUV continued east directly into the path of a westbound car, colliding with it head-on.

The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. on a section of the highway that is not twinned.

Police say two young children, a three-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy, were in the car with the woman who died. The boy was taken to hospital and is expected to survive. The girl was not injured.

The driver of the SUV, a 72-year-old woman from Pomquet, N.S., was taken to a Halifax hospital via Lifeflight.

The people inside the pick-up truck were not injured.

Part of Highway 104 near Broadway in Pictou County, N.S., is expected to be closed until late Monday evening. Traffic is being diverted to Highway 4 between Exits 27 and 29.
