This Hour Has 22 Minutes writers gather for night of comedy

The writers of CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes will be gathering together this Saturday for an uncensored night of stand up comedy at the Company House on Gottingen Street in Halifax.

Abdul Butt is one of the writers hitting the stage this weekend. He says the night gives the team an opportunity to stretch their legs and keep fresh after so many months of writing for the show.

"It’s just a great outlet for us to get out there and do it and have some fun."

Butt got his start in comedy by making videos with his friends high school. After perfecting his craft, he decided to try his jokes in front of an audience.

"I just jumped on stage and started telling jokes," says Butt

"It seems like the first one's always way better, you think, and then the rest of them suck until you get good at stand up," Butt says, laughing.  

The show will also give the writer a chance to perform bits that wouldn't make the politically-inspired sketch comedy on 22 Minutes says Butt.

"All of the writers are really talented at everything. They’re not just funny at doing political jokes, they’ve got everything under their belts."

Butt says that crowd can expect a little bit of everything at this show.

"I came up with the idea, thinking everyone that we work with ... are so funny but we never went out and did it in our own element together," he says.

"There’s deadpan comedy, then there is more energy, then you’ll have Jon Blair who does sketch charters. Everyone is on their own level of hilarious."
