A 19-year-old man who was hit by a vehicle while he was crossing a Dartmouth street last week has died of his injuries.

The man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries on Sept. 24 after he was hit in a crosswalk at around 9 p.m. at the intersection of Pleasant and Carleton streets.

The accident marks the second incident in that crosswalk this month.

Residents have lobbied local politicians for the past 15 years, demanding improvements. They've seen other accidents and near-collisions.

"Everyone's kind of shook up by it again. It's our killer crosswalk," said Nancy Hoelke, a resident of the area.

"Maybe when someone actually dies maybe we'll get lights."

The city said overhead lights, a flashing signal and push buttons will be installed sometime in December to improve visibility in the area.

The driver in the fatal incident has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
