RCMP have charged a school teacher in Tatamagouche, N.S., with sex offences against at least one student.

Nicole MacLeod, 36, was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, luring a child and other charges.

In a news release, RCMP said they were contacted earlier in the day by Tatamagouche Regional Academy about alleged inappropriate contact with a student by a teacher, who had been placed on leave a week earlier while the school investigated.

Tatamagouche Regional Academy is a combined elementary, junior and senior high school.

RCMP said MacLeod is accused of sexually assaulting one student on multiple occasions in May and June. The Murray Siding woman is also accused of sending explicit pictures to that student and "at least one other," the release said.

"Any time where we have an incident where a teacher or a person in authority in a school setting or in a setting where there are multiple access to youth, we're always open to the fact that there could be more victims and survivors of these assaults than what has been reported to us," said Const. Mitch Thompson in an interview.

Thompson encouraged people to contact police if they are a victim.

"Let us offer the supports that we have available," he said.

MacLeod is free on conditions until her first court appearance in September. Her name has already been removed from the staff list at Tatamagouche Regional Academy.
