Tara Thorne's picks for fun in Halifax Aug 28-30, 2015
Cat film festivals, swan songs from folk bands and turbo kids
Here are Tara Thorne's picks for fun around Halifax this weekend.
Turbo Kid
This Canadian film has a local connection, film wise: It was executive produced by Jason Eisener, who essentially connected the filmmakers to a producer in New Zealand who made the movie happen.
It's set in a post-apocalyptic 1997, is obsessed with the 80s (BMX bikes et al), has Michael Ironside with an eyepatch and is very gory and weird. It'll only be out for a week.
Just For Cats Film Festival
I missed this last year but it is a festival of cat videos. What more is there to know? RIP Tuxedo Stan. Citadel Hill, $5/$10, 7-9 p.m. on Saturday.
Kalle Mattson at the Carleton
I saw Kalle at IDOW at the very beginning of this year and he blew me away, singing these wonderful songs in a delicate voice. Then I saw him open for Rural Alberta Advantage at the Marquee and it was a real tough room.
Now he's back in a much more suitable environment at the Carleton Friday with a new EP called Avalanche. One of my favourite discoveries of this year.
Willie Stratton and the Boarding Party's final show at Gus
Willie is shutting down his folk persona, re-staffing his band and naming it something else no one will tell me. The band's been drifting toward rock pretty steadily this year. Still one of the best live shows going.
There will be pizza and all their merch will be cheap on Friday at Gus's Pub. They're with Rotary Park and Beach Bait.
Oh Pep! at the Carleton
On Sunday, this is a delightful Australian duo in town for HUFF. There aren't many women to be found on the bill as usual, so that's a double reason to go, and also they are awesome.
