Stay off the roads, say Halifax Regional Police as the province remains under a winter storm warning

"The heavy snowfall and blowing winds have made the road conditions hazardous for driving," said police in a news release.

"Less vehicles on the road makes it easier for the snow plow drivers to perform their duties. If motorists need to venture out into the storm police are advising motorists to adjust their driving habits and be mindful of the change of road conditions."

Police also want to remind people that a vehicle’s stopping distance increases when it’s slippery, "so allow extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. When approaching a red light or stop sign, begin stopping earlier to help prevent sliding into the intersection."

Visibility may also be an issue, say police.

Motorists are asked to watch for pedestrians and other vehicles.

"Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and wait until the vehicle comes to a complete stop before attempting to cross the road. We thank motorists and pedestrians for doing their part to help keep our roads safe," police said.

The overnight parking ban will be enforced overnight tonight between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.
