Sidney Crosby Parkway staff report coming
Hockey champion's former coach came up with the idea to get a street named after Sid the Kid
Sidney Crosby Parkway is a step closer to becoming a reality after Halifax regional council voted unanimously Tuesday for a staff report that will look into renaming a Cole Harbour street after the 28-year-old Stanley Cup-winning player.
The idea originated from Crosby's former hockey and baseball coach, Paul Mason, who wanted something visible in Cole Harbour to honour its most famous citizen.
Should staff recommend the name change go ahead, and council agree, Forest Hills Parkway would be renamed Sidney Crosby Parkway.
Crosby a 'great ambassador'
"Sidney is a great ambassador, a lot of the comments I have heard is he's a role model to our youth," said Coun. Lorelei Nicoll, who brought the motion to council.
Nicoll said Crosby has done a lot of work for the local community, including lending a hand to the Special Olympics and the IWK Health Centre, and holding the Sidney Crosby Hockey camp at Cole Harbour Place.
"Sidney really gives them his undivided attention and really makes them feel like they matter and that really goes a long way with our youth," said Nicoll.
No due date for report
Crosby is the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which have won the Stanley Cup twice under his leadership, including earlier this month. He also has two Olympic gold medals. He's also won the Conn Smythe Trophy — an award given to the most valuable player for his team in the playoffs.
Nicoll said there is no firm due date for the Sidney Crosby Parkway report "because no one really agreed that there was any urgency," said Nicoll.
The councillor said she would like the public to weigh in on renaming the street.
