Shannon Park School to be saved as Nova Scotia OKs purchase

Nova Scotia's Department of Education has approved a last-minute reprieve to save a Dartmouth school.

Shannon Park School had until Wednesday to come up with $313,000 to buy the facility from Canada Lands. That's a branch of the federal government that owns the old military site across the street.

The province confirmed late Wednesday it would authorize the purchase.

The Halifax Regional School Board had accumulated surplus funds from the province, but did not have approval to purchase the school. Late Wednesday, the province gave the approval to use the accumulated funds to save the school.

Now that the ownership of the school has been decided, the building faces significant renovations, estimated to cost $1.5 million.
