Americas Rugby News lists Truro winger as international prospect

Truro native Brett Johnson has been listed as a top international rugby prospect by Americas Rugby News, saying the winger has what it takes to become a national rugby star.

Truro native Brett Johnson has been listed as a top international rugby prospect by Americas Rugby News, saying the winger has what it takes to become a national rugby star. 

The website is held in high regard by fans of the sport and looks at rugby in the Americas. Johnson's name on the list means attention from international teams.

The 21 year old only started playing when he was 16, but after excelling at the sport in high school, Johnson was ready to hang up his cleats and join the military. 

It was at that point Rugby Nova Scotia's Jack Hanratty saw Johnson's potential and raw talent.

 "He just had that 'it' factor," said Hanratty.

"Jack basically told me to hold off on the military and see how rugby played out. Three  years later, I was on Canada's national team," said Johnson.

The east coast has been churning out some serious rugby talent lately. Besides Johnson, Mike Hamson from Halifax and Kyle Baillie from Summerside, P.E.I. were also chosen to play for Team Canada in the most recent Americas Rugby Championship.

Johnson also plays for his home team — the Truro Saints — and with a senior men's team out of Newfoundland called The Rock.

Only two Canadians made Americas Rugby News' top 10 list.
