Police allege they found cocaine and loaded handgun in Halifax apartment

A suspended player with the Halifax Rainmen basketball team was arrested by the Halifax Regional Police on Wednesday night and is now facing drug and weapons charges.

Tyler Bradley Richards is in his second season with the team and is a former star player with St. Francis Xavier University.

A unit made up of Halifax Regional Police and RCMP officers arrested Richards, along with Marcus Demitries James, 23, during a search of an apartment in the 100 block of Connor Lane in Halifax.

Richards was suspended from the Rainmen earlier this week in relation to a separate criminal investigation.

And it's not first time he's been in trouble with the law. In 2009, Richards and two other St. Francis Xavier University players were charged with assault causing bodily harm. It related to a late night incident in Antigonish that sent one man to hospital.

Richards and James are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on Thursday.
