The Nova Scotia government has announced $2.6 million in aid for people who had their homes or businesses flooded in and around Truro last month.

The Dexter government is also increasing the cap on disaster financial assistance for homeowners and small business operators from $50,000 to $80,000.

The cap on disaster financial assistance for non-profit organizations will rise to $200,000.

Many homes in central Nova Scotia — which were flooded after nearly 75 millimetres of rain in one day caused two rivers to overflow in the Truro area — are not covered for flooding in their insurance policies.

The increased cap will stay in effect for future disaster assistance claims.

The NDP government said it will apply to the federal government to cover a portion under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangement.
