Prime Minister Justin Trudeau coming to Nova Scotia on Tuesday
Trudeau will announce details of federal infrastructure program
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be in Nova Scotia on Tuesday to officially sign off on his government's new infrastructure program.
Government sources at the federal and provincial levels say the announcement will take place during an event Tuesday morning in Bridgetown, near the home of Premier Stephen McNeil.
McNeil and other provincial and federal officials will be on hand for the event.
Big money campaign promises
During the federal election campaign, Trudeau and the Grits promised to spend $125 billion over 10 years on infrastructure plans such as:
- Quadrupling federal investment in public transit to $20 billion.
- Providing upwards of $20 billion for social infrastructure projects like affordable housing, child care and community centres.
- Investing $20 billion on green infrastructure to create jobs and more environmentally-friendly energy.
When the government released its budget in March, the first phase of the infrastructure spending plan included almost $12 billion in new infrastructure spending and kept a $65-billion program introduced by the former Conservative government.
An announcement and a barbecue
In Nova Scotia, initial infrastructure spending is going toward things such as buses, ferries and harbours. In the last month, the federal government has announced more than $60 million toward upgrades at small craft harbours in the province.
Trudeau is scheduled to be in Jubilee Park in the morning, before travelling to Pictou County to attend a barbecue. According to a posting on Central Nova MP Sean Fraser's Facebook page, the barbeque is taking place at 11:30 a.m. at Glasgow Square in New Glasgow.

- A previous version of the story said the Tuesday barbecue would be held in Pictou. In fact, it is being held in New Glasgow, Pictou County.Aug 13, 2016 6:48 AM AT
