Nova Scotia·FORECAST

Peter Coade's weather forecast for Feb. 20, 2015

Saturday is looking clear and cold before Sunday's messy weather moves in around midnight.

Messy mix of weather Sunday with snow changing rain, then possible flash freeze

We may be looking at a flash-freeze scene for Sunday night as temperatures will be dropping to well below the normal for Monday in another freeze-up. (Mark Cadiz/CBC)

The centre of the disturbance that laid down a fresh blanket of snow Thursday moved on to Anticosti Island Friday morning in the northern Gulf Of St. Lawrence.

The system will continue tracking to the northeast over Labrador and into the South Labrador Sea, however it is dragging a trough of low pressure across the Maritimes in its wake Friday.

As a result, no real clearing can be expected until overnight Friday as a ridge of high pressure builds into the region.

This feature will ensure a mostly sunny but slightly colder Saturday.

Next up is a disturbance that should track right across the Maritimes during the day Sunday.

This nasty feature will spread snow across the entire region, starting in the west, around midnight Saturday night.

However, if that track holds true, snow will be changing to rain in Nova Scotia and become mixed with or possibly change to rain in southern New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. That will make for a real mess.

In any case this moves out Sunday night and we may be looking at a flash-freeze scene for Sunday night as temperatures will be dropping to well below the normal for Monday in another freeze-up.
